I’ll be honest – I’ve always been a pretty sensitive person. And while sometimes being sensitive can serve me well, there are definitely times when it can be a bit of a detriment.
When I think back to the 16 year old version of myself, my sensitivity definitely got in the way rather than serving me too well. I think everyone can relate to being a self-conscious, slightly awkward teenager, and I was always on edge that someone thought I wasn’t cool enough, or pretty enough, or didn’t stack up to my peers in some way I suddenly thought was important. Every time someone even looked at me the wrong way I completely wilted, so when someone said something less than kind to me – game over – I became a blubbering, sad, heart-broken mess. After a many years {and some serious toughening up}, I’ve finally become a lot stronger when someone says something a little rude to me, or leaves a crazy comment on my blog or Instagram account – but I can’t even imagine what it’s like for young girls or teenagers these days with the addition of social media in their social lives. In an constant, social media saturated world, there are so many more pressures for young girls on how they should look, act, and dress – making their teenage years even tougher. And when you add people to the mix who feel empowered to leave hateful comments, or say anything unkind to another person on social media or online, they make the internet a harmful, damaging place rather than a source of inspiration for young girls. Over 50% of girls think that negativity they see online damages their confidence*, even if that negativity isn’t directed at them. Even someone else saying something mean online hurts anyone who sees it – so it’s time to spread a little more love, rather than trying to tear others down with negativity. It’s important to remember that our words have power – and Dove is giving people a sweet way for people to remember that important message. Dove wants to support building self-esteem in 20 million girls in 2020, encouraging girls to change the conversation and make social media a place for positivity and body-confidence. On my recent trip to Target, I picked up 3 of my favorite Dove products and scored this free #SpeakBeautiful bracelet, which serves as an important reminder to spread some love and positivity out there on social media.Wanna help change the conversation too? First of all, how cool do you look in this outfit? Love it! Second of all, this is a great message to send out into the world. I can’t even imagine growing up with all the technology and social media that saturates our life now – I probably never would’ve left the house for fear of mean girls! I’m so glad that you are able to now embrace what an awesome person you are and ignore the haters.
Right? I can’t even imagine, I thought middle school and high school we’re hard enough! Happy we lived in a social media free world for most of our early years 😉 xx
I love what Dove is doing, what a great brand to partner with! And of course you look so darn cute Maya! This is the perfect fall outfit and I’m seriously lusting over your shoes!
