Earlier this month, my bedroom was a hot mess. Like a bunch of random furniture, taupe walls, nothing actually matched, kind of a mess – and when I tried to sleep at night I would spend the first 10-15 minutes thinking, “man, I wish I had one of those Pinterest-worthy bedrooms to sleep in every night.” Don’t get me wrong – I love a beautiful space, and I’m not above spending a little money to make it beautiful – but I seriously lack a vision, and a basic understanding of what colors go well together. I typically gravitate towards, “let’s keep everything white and hope for the best” as my go-to design aesthetic, so clearly – I needed some help thinking outside the box! Thankfully for myself {and my bedroom} I have a few badass women and some pretty inspiration that helped me get my butt in gear and turn my super drab bedroom into a space that I get excited to sleep in again! I knew that I wanted my bedroom to feel cozy and look chic, but still keep the space feeling homey – and I wanted to make my bedroom a little bold too! Rather than sticking to neutrals, I opted for some more subtle colors, and I fell in love with a baby blue hue, Skyler Blue (432-1DB), from Dutch Boy® Paints when perusing the paint aisle at Menards a few weeks back. As someone who’s never picked out paint colors before {yes, I’m an adult and this was my first time ever painting a wall!}, I was so thankful that Dutch Boy® Paints and Menards made picking out the perfect paint color for my bedroom a breeze. Their paint section is broken into 5 convenient mini-sections for everything that you’d ever want to paint –their Simple Solutions, to classic colors, to weekend makeovers. They even have QR codes on brochures and color chips throughout the store that help you view your favorite colors and DIY projects on their mobile friendly site. Better yet, if you’re a gal who loves to get inspiration online {guilty…}, the Dutch Boy Paints® website is just as easy to navigate with the Dutch Boy Color Visualizer, project how-to’s, videos and more, all of which I don’t think I could have lived without for a first time painter!
I picked out Dutch Boy Platinum® Paint and Primer with Extreme-Hide technology, a long name which basically means it was the easiest paint on the planet to use! Rather than needing to prime or sandmy darker taupe wall before beginning the painting process, I was easily able to apply a single coat over the existing taupe paint color and it looked completely perfect – covering up any imperfections for a seriously beautiful finish. I knew I wanted my bedroom’s makeover to be as easy as possible, but also leave my walls with a beautiful finish, so I knew I had to use painting tools from a brand I could trust. After much research, I decided to use painting tools from Purdy®, including their ClearCut® Elite™ Glide™ and XL™ Elite™ Sprig™ brushes, and Marathon™ Roller Cover and Revolution Frame. These tools helped me apply my baby blue paint evenly and ensured it was blended perfectly. Besides being incredibly durable, the roller covers did an amazing job of equally distributing the paint – making it easy to do one coat before moving onto the next section of my bedroom without getting tired {the roller frame was really lightweight!}. I even used the paint brushes to get the tricky details of my banister and trim. Instead of spending time taping around my room, the sharp edges of the ClearCut Elite Glide brush made it easy to create a perfectly straight paint line without getting the paint everywhere {which is totally what I was most nervous about as a paint novice!}. And I do have to say, the final result was pretty incredible – from drab taupe to the perfect baby blue, my room feels a little more cool and a lot more calming than it did before {and a whole lot more Pinterest-worthy too!}.To give my bedroom a completely fresh feel, I hired my friend Claire {the interior designer and blogger behind Centered by Design!} to help me design a bedroom I knew I would truly love. She came up with an inspiration board with a few fresh items to make my bedroom feel like a whole new space – including a new bedspread, coffee table {I love this grey one from Wayfair that was a steal!} and some beautiful gold sconces. Since I already had my favorite MegMade red dresser, we found ways to incorporate the color throughout the room with books, flowers, mixed metal accents and more. I used a few of my favorite home accessories to add some color and texture to the space, including some fresh flowers and leaf stems Claire collected from one of her favorite house plants to add some more pops of color to my room. She even added an antiqued mirror from West Elm to make my teeny tiny bedroom look a little bigger and brighter, matching the mirror of the sconces to tie them all together. As someone who’s definitely a design novice, I was so thankful to have her vision to bring my beautiful new bedroom to life – and she even made it so I wasn’t quite so afraid of adding a little color to the space too!And one of the most amazing parts of my new bedroom is most definitely my beautiful new wall paper from my girl Erin of Relativity Textiles. I’ve long been a fan of Erin’s incredible, originally designed wallpapers, and I knew I needed to have a fun accent wall in my bedroom to really make the transformation an incredible one. I chose this beautiful baby blue Kanako floral wallpaper to match my new paint shade, and it was even more gorgeous in person than these photos do it justice. I am constantly in awe of Erin’s incredible design and eye for beautiful pattern and texture, and I’m so excited I get to wake up to this beautiful printed wall every day! Is it bad that I want to wallpaper and re-paint every room in my house now that my bedroom is so darn gorgeous? Erin – let’s make it happen 😉 With this pretty incredible makeover, my bedroom went from being my least favorite room in my house to becoming {by far!} my new favorite space. It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint, beautiful new wallpaper and a few chic home accessories can do to make a girl fall back in love with her bedroom again.
A special thanks to Dutch Boy® Paints available at Menards and Purdy for sponsoring this post and making my bedroom makeover possible! As always all opinions are my own, thanks for supporting the brands that make Charmingly Styled possible.
