natural cold remedies.

‘Tis the season to bust out the Kleenex’s and hand sanitizer – cold & flu season is back with a vengeance! I’m not sure about where you live, but people are dropping like flies over here in Chicago. It’s getting colder out, people are sneezing, and space on public transportation seems to be getting smaller and smaller. Excuse me while I sanitize my keyboard for a minute….
But in all reality, there are things you can do to kick the common cold to the curb {and avoid getting sick in the first place}. To keep it real with my hippie dippy roots, here are some all natural remedies that I happen to swear by. They really work – plus, they’re au natural, so your body thanks you in advance.
raw honey – besides tasting like a party in your mouth, raw honey mice with a little cinnamon can help ward off a cold when you start to get the sniffles and sneezes. Mix 1 teaspoon raw honey with 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 2x a day for 3 days and be amazed.
ginger root – I’m a total ginger nut, so this is my go-to whenever I start feeling a cold coming on. Mince a 1.5 inch section of ginger and put in a strainer over a mug. Pour a cup of boiling water over the ginger and let it stand for 5 minutes. Mix with a little honey and kick that cold to the curb.
lemon – I’m pretty sure lemon is just good for everything and anything – mix it with honey and you’ve got yourself a healthy pick me up when you’re feeling especially icky. Mix 1 cup water, 2 teaspoons honey and 2 teaspoons lemon juice and add some cayenne pepper for a healthy good time.
licorice – another kick booty cold fighter, licorice can be added to tea to help prevent and treat colds. I’ve tried it with 2 quarts water, 1/4 cup licorice root and 3 inches of fresh ginger sliced. Pour the boiling water over your ginger and licorice for 10 minutes and you’ve got yourself a cold kicking winner.
oranges – vitamin c baby! A glass a day keeps the doctor away…or something along those lines.
garlic – although it doesn’t sound super appetizing, raw garlic is known to work miracles when it comes to fighting off colds. Technically you’re supposed to eat a spoonful, but the thought of that makes me even more nauseous. To make it more palatable, try 2 minced cloves with olive oil, honey and top on a cracker.
echinacea – the mother of hippie dippy cold prevention! Some people question the herbs effectiveness, but I swear that it works every time. Take it as a tea to soothe a sore throat {which is actually pretty delicious}, or in it’s pill or liquid form.
What are your go-to remedies to keep away colds this season?

Love this, Maya! I've never known about many of these (except the oranges), but I DO eat a lot of garlic, so I guess I'm doing something right!

Most mornings I'll drink lemon tea sweetened with raw honey, drinking lemon water (or tea) has so many amazing health effects that I love having it on a daily basis. If my tummy feels a little upset or I feel like I might be getting sick, I love making home made ginger tea, it's such a natural remedy! Lovely post lady!
