Designer Profile:Yvonne Luong

Yvonne Luong is an incredibly talented designer {and one of the nicest people I’ve ever met}. Although she only graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in the spring of 2012, Yvonne is already making some serious waves in the fashion world. After designing a gorgeous collection {see above!}, she’s became a finalist in Elle’s next fashion designer competition and is featured in the October issue of Elle magazine. Yvonne was sweet enough {as usual} to let me ask her a few questions about herself, her work as a designer and what’s next for her in the coming year!
Yvonne Loung

Age:
22
Where are you from?
I’m a bit of a mutt, my mom is from Taiwan and my father is from Vietnam, however my mom’s parents had immigrated from Shanghai and my dad’s parents were from Hong Kong. I was born and raised in Madison, WI but four years ago I moved to New York City to pursue my fashion design dreams!

 How do you describe your personal style?
I usually try to pull off sophisticated, vintage chic although I’m sure at times I’m waay off mark. {correction, she’s always fabulous…}

 What’s your style Inspiration?
I’m not sure if I have an exact inspiration, I just try to find things that are unique yet are easy to mix and match with.

 Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
I love the idea of creating walking art with textiles. I find inspiration in the fabrics I use. Every fabric has its own signature characteristics that make it different from any other fabric, I try to capitalize on those strengths as well as introduce new elements that would otherwise be unexpected.
What are your favorite pieces to design?
A dress or gown that will be apart of someone’s important or special day.

What’s your greatest accomplishment as a designer?
Having the honor of showing two times at Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week during New York Fashion Week after only 3 months of graduating college.

What you’re looking forward to in 2013?
I’m looking into applying to Central Saint Martins in England for my Masters and we’ll see where everything goes from there!
I’m so excited to see where Yvonne goes from here – you have a fabulous career in fashion ahead of you, and I’m so proud of what you’ve already accomplished! If you’re a fan of Yvonne’s work, vote for her for the people’s choice award in the Elle Fashion Next competition here
