how to grow out a pixie cut

hairstyles-to-grow-out-a-pixie-cut“A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life” – Coco Chanel

Truer words were never spoken. I don’t know what it is about traumatic life events, but for some reason every time something big happens in my life – my first instinct is to change my hair. Whether it be a cut, color, or a new up-do, there’s something that makes you feel like a million bucks as soon as you change your hair. My mom refers to highlights as having the same effect as taking anti-depressants, and I can’t say she’s wrong!

A few years ago, my hair started falling out more than normal, and I was completely freaked out. After a few months {and half the amount of hair I started out with}, I ended up taking things into my own hands and getting a pixie cut, which was the biggest haircut I’ve ever had in my life. From hair way past my shoulders to short snippets, it totally changed how I viewed myself {and made me realize that hairs actually not that important anyways.} I don’t know what our obsession is with hair as a society, but chopping it all off was one of the most freeing experiences for me. The only not-so-great part? Growing my locks out again.

The biggest struggle was finding haircuts that can help you grow out your luscious locks, without making you look like a teenage boy {confusion: this may have happened once or twice…} Here are a few fool-proof haircuts that will help you grow out a pixie cut, and make sure you look chic no matter what.

8-hairstyles-to-grow-out-a-pixie-cut1) The grown out pixie: The perfect Emma Watson inspired cut – go for a pixie haircut that’s not too short with longer pieces in the front, which makes it easier to grow out in the long run.

2) The styled pixie: Once your bangs get longer, start to tease them to the side with a dramatic part, Ginnifer Goodwin style.

3) The side swept pixie: Once your hair starts growing out, naturally swipe it over your brows. Continue to regularly trim the hairs in the back to make sure you don’t get any mullet action {we’ve all been there…}

4) The tussled pixie: When you’re ready for the next step, let your hair go a little crazy! Tussle the front and side strands for a laid-back look, like Michelle Williams’ effortlessly chic look.

5) A behind the ears cut: At this point, your hair might start to be getting a little awkward {I lovingly called this the “dutch boy” phase…} Use bobby pins for your bangs and sides to train your hair to lay behind your ears to start growing out a bob.

6) The short bob: Take a cue from the queen of the bob, Katie Holmes and try out a perfect short bob. This is the perfect time to get your hairs more even while texturing your hair to give it volume.

7) The chin length bob: This is the part where you start to do a happy dance because your hair is finally down to your chin! Help shorter strands grow out with styles like a half up-do, braids or twists.

8) A long bob: The official finish line of growing out your pixie cut – the lob {aka, long bob} is ultra trendy, chic cut while your going through the final stages of growing out your hair. I love this look and the gorgeous highlights to boot!

    My hair is falling out, too, and I’m ALWAYS upset about it. But goodness girl, up until last week I had no idea you’d ever had a pixie cut! (Is it weird that we didn’t know each other then?!) I think you were SUPER adorable in the pixie, but I also love your current ‘do! And I LOVE what you’ve done with the color! If only I could replicate… 😉

    I’m at stage 5, my main tip is vitamins (Hair Burst) and Alpecin Shampoo, alpecin is meant for men with hair loss but it really helped me out! I reguarly massage my scalp and have tried the inversion method…. I’ve done it all 🙂
