runway to diy: floral collar

I’m pleased as punch to present the newest column to Charmingly Styled, Runway to DIY created by my fabulous intern Madalyn! As you all know, I’m not the craftiest of people…by a long shot. Most of my DIY’s involve super glue and less than 5 minutes, so Madalyn {an apparel + textile design student at UW Madison} is here to show us some legit DIY’s to impress your friends. First up in this adorable Peter Pan collar which I’m obsessing over 🙂
Madalyn: Have you ever wondered what it was like to actually be able to flaunt the season’s hottest trends without draining your bank account? Yeah, so have we. So in an effort to make runway trends more accessible, we bring to you a brand new column called Runway DIY! We will use runway inspirations to create affordable and stylish DIY projects you can create at home.
Floral print is always a must have for the spring/summer season; however, it can sometimes become difficult to find other ways to wear the print besides the obvious sundress. So for this DIY project we looked to Honor’s S/S 2014 collection as our inspiration. Giovanna Randall, creative director of Honor, reimagined the floral print in the form of a collar. As shown in the runway photos above, Giovanna paired the a floral collar with a black dress for a stark contrast and also a sundress for a floral monochromatic look. The great thing about the collar we are going to make today is that it is detachable so once you make one, you can pair it with hundreds of other looks. So are you ready to get started!? Just follow the photos and instructions and you will be a DIY queen in no time!

Runway: Floral Collars from Honor Spring 2014
DIY: Removable Floral Collar

Total Cost: Less than $10.00
Total Time: 1 hour
Supplies
You will need…
-â…› yard of floral fabric of choice (cotton or linen works best!)
-â…› yard of fusible interfacing
-â…› yard of fabric covered elastic
-A collared shirt/oxford
-Tracing paper
-Transferable pigment tracing paper
-Tracing wheel
-Scissors
-Pins
-Ruler
-Thread
-1 button of choice
-A hand sewing needle
-Iron
-Sewing machine

Process
1. Lay the pigmented tracing paper face down on top of the white tracing paper. Lay the collar on top and trace the shape. The pigmented paper will leave the outline on the white tracing paper.
2. Trace over the dashed blue lines with a pencil and create straight lines with your ruler. Add ½ seam allowance to all the edges besides the bottom. You now have your very own pattern, you little patternmaker!
3. Fold your fabric in half with right sides together and lay the pattern piece side with no seam allowance on the fold. Pin the pattern piece and cut the fabric.
4. Don’t forget to cut your interfacing, too!
5. Trim the edges of the interfacing and iron to the wrong side of the fabric.
6. Sew the edges at ½ inch. Don’t forget to sew the elastic into the seam for the button loop!
7. Iron your collar.
8. Hand sew on your button/bead of choice.
9. Congrats! You completed your very own runway DIY floral collar!
Now pair your new floral collar with a black top and you are ready to hit the town looking like the most stylish DIY fashionista there is!
